Here's to pushing forward.
I'm off to a bit of a slow start in these first few weeks of January. I'm a bit disappointed in the empty days in my planner, and I want to work to not only fill them, but fill them with meaningful blurbs. Circumstances at home have slowed me down considerably, but the little slip of paper next to me that reads "NO EXCUSES" is reminding me not to use that as a reason to not work.
Here's to pushing forward.

I bought a planner a few months ago, and have been thinking about next year ever since. December marks the last month of Charcoal Thursdays and 5-Sketch Sundays, as I will be working hard on my prized graphic novel project Rune starting January first. I still plan on doing PokeMondays; however, I will be taking a hiatus from those as well. In the past, I've set deadlines for myself with comics, having no idea whatsoever how long it might actually take to complete pages or editing. That causes unnecessary stress and feelings of failure. Instead, I've decided (particularly since I also have a day job to maintain) to keep a planner, writing down what I've done instead of what I plan to do. Looking back on all my hard work should be much more motivating. To keep me from slacking off, however, I had to set some sort of guidelines for my work. I'm familiar with the editing process, so I've set a deadline for that, but everything else... well, take a look below.
It's been over a month since I last posted anything. This is the case for a few reasons. Number one: I've been focusing on writing and editing Rune, which I can't show you evidence of because spoilers. Number two: I've taken a second job, which means that the amount of time I have to devote to writing and drawing each week is now an average of one day, and constantly decreasing. Number three: I did have a chance to do a really quick speedpaint the other day on Twitter, in case you missed that. There's also plenty of evidence there that I've been working hard. I'm hoping to have my editing done by the end of the month, and I'm hoping that Chapter 1 of Rune will be available to read sometime between September and the end of this year.
Keep an eye out for more things! I'm doing a test-run with Redbubble using a few designs I've already done. One of these designs is the first Omnicakes tshirt, as seen here! Redbubble is really good about making shirts; they custom make orders and they do it really quickly, so they'll always have your style and size on-hand. Prices range from $21 for a basic tshirt to $50-some dollars for hoodies. I know that's not cheap, but I promise you they are worth it.
So please go check it out! I finally got myself a Wacom tablet, something I've wanted since high school when I first found out about such devices.
As a result, my productivity has spiked, and I've been motivated to finish several pieces that have been sitting around in my "to-do" folder for a while, just to test out my new toy. Keep an eye out for the Skyrim Sketches gallery: a collection of perhaps-colored charcoal drawings of alchemy ingredients found in Skyrim. Mountain flowers and Deathbell are already done and posted on my DA page. Visit IGIRLFRIEND.WEEBLY.COM every Friday to read new comics about what my girlfriend and I are up to these days. Some will be funny. Some will be serious. Some will just be insights into my week. This is how I force myself to be ambitious. Also posters in Korean. When people ask me what Rune is about, I'm not sure what exactly to tell them. I really wish I had a portable slideshow of pictures that would accurately explain a vague summary of the entire 9-part epic graphic novel, but not give away any good parts. Instead, here is a picture of my binder, a vague word-summary, and a pinup of the villain of the story. In the island country of Tyria, a young woman named Amarande is imprisoned for murdering her father, one of the nation's most prized warriors. After a dramatic escape, she discovers a whole new realm previously only dreamed about by mankind. Upon hearing from a mysterious figure that the gods have plans to end humankind, her father's oblivious protege decides to protect her on her journey to learn the truth. And hey! Here's that pinup of the "villain," Enyo, also pictured left. If I think about this realistically, Rune will be written by the end of April 2014. One might expect Book One to be available for your eyeballs' pleasure by the end of 2014, if all goes well. Large updates will be posted here, and tiny updates are posted regularly on my Twitter (along with sketches and WIPs and the occasional joke or musing).
After spending the past week reuniting with the first video game I've ever owned, I've discovered a renewed love for each of the 151 original pokemon. Somewhere in my brain, I've crafted an individual personality for each one. For example, new-big-brother Bulbasaur, growing-up-and-tougher Ivysaur, and ancient-sleeping-giant Venusaur.
My plan is to draw all of them. No real time frame, since now my weekly comic brain is kicking up again, and I still need a job. However, I've already challenged a friend to do the same, and I'm excited to get started on tough-but-oblivious Charmander and all the rest. More to come. |
